Macuco Boat ride and jungle tour
click to enlargeThe jungle safari starts with a drive of 3 km along a forest trail in a cart pulled by a electrical vehicle. Several stops are made for bilingual guides to provide information about the flora and fauna of the park. At the 3 km point, an optional 600-meter walking trail leads to a small waterfall called Salto do Macuco (one can also skip this trail and go directly to the docks by jeep). From there, the trail continues to the banks of the Iguassu River, where an upstream zodiac speed boat tour to DevilĀ“s Throat begins. The exhilarating expedition is made in a large, sturdy, double engine rubber launch and affords the visitor a unique and breathtakingly beautiful view of the Falls. People get wet on this tour. Some people call it a jet boat tour. The first tour starts at 9:30 a.m. and the last tour departs at 4:00 p.m.

During the tour, one can also decide for a dry boat, that goes only around the falls, not under.

How long is the tour? Depends how busy is the park, if the park is not busy and one skips the jungle walk, may take around 95 minutes.
Location: Iguassu National Park, 3 km (2 miles) before the Brazilian side of the Falls
Approximate time: 2 to 3 hours plus travel time
Travel distance: 24 km (15 mi) from Iguassu Falls city center

The Macuco Bird
click to enlargeMacuco is the name of the gray bird tinamus solitarius which lives on the ground within the forest, discretely moving under the cover of lush vegetation. It eats insects, seeds and fruit and can live about 14 years in captivity.

Nesting Habits
click to enlargeThe Macuco nest on the ground. Its blue egg is one of the most beautiful eggs in the world. In the forest, the male constructs the nest where the female lays 6 to 14 turkish-green eggs. The incubation period is 19 days.
