click to enlargeThe reservoir is 170 km or 107 miles long and 7 km or 4,5 miles wide in average. Nature herself is used to protect the reservoir. Of the area occupied by the hydroelectric complex, which extends from Guaira to Iguassu Falls, 45% consists of old growth or reforested vegetation whose function is to protect Itaipu Lake. Together with the biological reserves and refuges, this area, called the Protection Belt, covers 108 866 hectares, an area equivalent to more than half of the Iguassu National Park. The lake covers an area of 1,350 square kilometers or 843 square miles and contains 29 Billon M3 of water.
