San Ignacio Mini Archeological site
San Ignacio Mini was founded in 1611 in the Guaira region (Parana State, Brazil). The people fled to Argentina in 1631 to escape enslavement by the Portuguese bandeirantes and settled near Posadas, Argentina. The urban planning of this settlement is quite interesting. The largest number of preserved ruins can be found in San Ignacio. The church and the school were finished in 1724. The monk Pedro Gronse and the Italian architect Juan Brasanelli worked on red sandstone facilities and the church in a style known as Guarani Baroque. Its population reached 4,300 inhabitants in 1731. In the 1940s the walls were restored in order to permit a greater understanding of the spaces, squares, streets, houses, school, and workshops. The interpretation center is located at the entrance to the archaeological site. It contains exhibitions on the history of the Mission and the local environment of the natives. Also on exhibit there is a model of the Mission. This site is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1984. Location map.
