| The cityThe city of Foz do Iguacu (reads Iguassu) is situated on Brazils frontier with Paraguay and Argentina at an altitude of 164 meters above sea level. In just a few decades, Foz do Iguassu has evolved from a small town into an important commercial center and tourist attraction. It now has a population of over 267.000 inhabitants. The transformation came about largely as a result of the construction of the Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Dam and the tourism activity generated by the Iguassu Falls National Park. Location: Brazil |
| Street MarketEvery Sunday morning one can visit the street market at the Avenida Juscelino Kubitschek - Downtown - Foz do Iguacu - From 7:00 a.m. until midday. |
| Peace Square - Praca da PazThe artist Miguel Hachen was in charge of the work ??A Lenda das Cataratas?, at Praca da Paz, in the centre of Foz do Iguassu. The 165 square meter panel, made in mosaics with images of the fauna and flora of the Iguassu National Park, tells the love story of the Naipi and Taroba Indians, who, in legend, originated the Iguassu Falls.
A water mirror was built around the mural, as a waterfall in the background, representing the Falls. Miguel Hachen, a specialist in Neo Guarani art, was born in Argentina but became a Brazilian citizen. Mr. Hachen has lived in Iguassu for 30 years. Location: Av. Juscelino Kubitschek / Rua Barao do Rio Branco |
| CITY HISTORY
|
| The armyThe Brazilian Army arrived in Iguassu Falls in 1889 to establish a settlement and guard the borders. There were only 324 people living in the place that one day would be called Foz do Iguassu at that time: 188 Paraguayans, 93 Brazilians, 33 Argentineans, 5 Frenchmen, 2 Asians, 2 Spaniards and 1 Englishman. |
| The settlersThe settlers that came from southern Brazil were the first to arrive in the area. They started the colonization, clearing the land and starting farms. From 1950 to 1970, along with the farms, there also arose small communities based on the production of various crops. The manual labor was provided by small families. Until 1970, Iguassu Falls was considered a small city. In 1950 there were 3,404 inhabitants, in 1960 more than 9,753 inhabitants. The urban population grew from 20,147 inhabitants in 1970 to 101,447 inhabitants in 1980 due to the construction of the Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Dam. Today there are more than 275,000 people living in Iguassu Falls.
(The demographic data are from The Brazilian Bureau of Demographic Statistics, Rio de Janeiro) |
| Melting potFew Brazilian cities have a richer ethnic diversity than Foz do Iguassu. This racial "melting pot" is the result of a tendency that began with the colonization of this region. Due to territorial disputes and other historical factors, it has been cosmopolitan from the beginning. Nowadays, there are people from over 75 different countries.
